Michael Kors began his career in 1981 at the Fashion Institute of Technology in NYC. He initially gained attention from the fashion world when he designed for a small boutique in New York. After that success he began his own label and starting selling at upscale department stores like Bergdorf Goodman. The Michael Kors mission has not faltered since he began designing in the 80’s. As his mission statement points out “The company's heritage is rooted in producing polished, sleek, sophisticated American sportswear with a jet-set attitude.” Michael Kors is the quintessential designer for American women.
